THYROTOXICOSIS (HYPERTHYROIDISM)
Thyrotoxicosis, a common clinical condition consequent to excess thyroid hormone, can be caused by a number of different disorders; these should be differentiated in the individual patient for proper management (Table 68-2). Graves’ disease is the most common cause in young individuals, whereas toxic nodular goiter is more prevalent in the elderly. Transient thyrotoxicosis is frequently associated with thyroiditis. Also exposure to iodide (contrast studies) and iodine-containing drugs (e.g., amiodarone) has become a relatively common cause of thyrotoxicosis. The other conditions listed are relatively rare.
